Toronto-based AI tech company Wisedocs has been growing rapidly in the insurance space. As companies look into automation by leveraging AI, Wisedocs is at the forefront of this revolution. Wisedocs is an AI-powered automation platform that processes and understands medical documents in real time, making it easier for organizations in the insurance industry to evaluate medical claims more rapidly and accurately.
We sat down with Connor Atchison to discuss the development with Wisedocs as it continues to scale. Connor Atchison is the Co-founder and CEO of Wisedocs, the smart way to review and summarize medical records. Connor is an experienced founder with a demonstrated history of working in health services, information technology, and management consulting. He aims to digitize a formerly manual industry through the adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning to support tedious processes. As a former veteran with 12 years of military service under the Department of National Defence, he strives to change the process for filing health insurance and disability claims for insurance, legal, medical evaluators, and their claimants.
What was the inspiration behind Wisedocs?
My time in the Canadian Armed Forces was an eye-opener in many ways; working in the healthcare administration side and having a personal family experience, I saw firsthand the challenges of the complicated and convoluted process of claims that was negatively impacting people’s health and livelihood. I spent time navigating the often frustrating maze of the medical claims process and seeing how the backlogs were impacting the claimant’s ability to heal. The endless paperwork, the waiting, the uncertainty—it was overwhelming.
I realized that this wasn’t just about streamlining a process; it was about bringing compassion and efficiency to a system that so many rely on. I felt a determined need to make things better and to create a solution that would ease this journey for others – enter, Wisedocs.
Processing complex medical records is laborious, as you mentioned. How does Wisedocs empower its customers to simplify this?
Wisedocs simplifies medical documentation with an AI platform that streamlines medical record review, indexing, and summarization. Our intelligent character recognition technology surpasses standard optical character recognition (OCR), adapting to decipher unstructured medical records such as handwritten notes and medical terminology more accurately over time. Our platform’s artificial intelligence (AI) medical summaries condense extensive records into meaningful insights, streamlining review processes and saving our clients time gaining an overall picture of the medical record. Customization is critical, with outputs tailored to each client’s specific needs or asks.
Our platform has proven pivotal in helping healthcare professionals efficiently manage health data for better decision-making. We’re dedicated to boosting efficiency for medical professionals so they can prioritize patient care.
What’s the growth trajectory been like as you continue to scale?
Since the beginning of Wisedocs, we’ve experienced steady growth. We began as Bear Health Technologies, a platform for individual customers. Since then, we’ve switched to working alongside the claims ecosystem of legal, healthcare, and insurance providers, dedicating ourselves to our artificial intelligence medical record review and summarization platform.
With backing from Ripple Ventures, Greensky Ventures, Blue Sky Equities, Halo Health, and several healthcare and insurance executives, we’ve expanded our reach and capabilities. The introduction of our new AI Medical Record Summaries platform marks significant progress and innovation in the space. As we continue to scale, our primary goal remains: addressing healthcare challenges and offering valuable solutions to our users.
What is the role of AI in the Wisedocs platform?
At Wisedocs, AI is fundamental to our Medical Summary Platform. We leverage AI to efficiently summarize vast medical records, turning pages of data into concise medical insights. Our platform offers innovative tools like an interactive timeline, keyword filtering, and a summary builder, all powered by AI. This allows professionals, from insurance carriers to law firms, to extract crucial clinical information swiftly. With our deep clinical knowledge and our proprietary AI’s precision, we aim to simplify and enhance the medical record review process, reshaping how claims are handled in the insurance world.
What trends do you see in your space? Where is the industry headed in the next few years?
In our space, the trend is clear: automation and AI are becoming increasingly essential. We’re moving away from manual, labour-intensive processes as an industry to more intelligent, data-driven approaches. In the next few years, I see the industry embracing AI, not just as a tool, but as a partner that offers deeper insights and enhances decision-making. Data security will also take center stage, as the handling of sensitive medical information requires stringent protection. Our commitment is to remain at the forefront of industry trends, ensuring our platform evolves with the changing needs of the market.
What’s next with Wisedocs? Are there any exciting partnerships or updates to look forward to?
Looking ahead, Wisedocs is poised for some thrilling developments. We’re actively exploring partnerships that align with our vision of transforming the medical claims process.
